LINC Caring Communities After School Program
at
Whittier Elementary
Since late September, I've been working with an amazing group of very diverse kids from my neighborhood. They are part of a LINC funded after school program. When they're not studying, or going to girl/boy scouts, or drumming and drilling, they make art with me! (They keep them busy).
We've done everything from making our own sugar skull pinata (for the kindergartners),
to a construction paper paintings, to mosaic tiled portraits. We even make a mural every season on the wall outside the cafeteria where we meet.
This spring we've been working on a landscape mural that is made up of tracings of our hands on different materials. The dirt is made of recycled magazines. The grass is green crayon and watercolor hands. The clouds are made of handmade paper hands glued together. Even the trees and the flowers will have our "hands" in it.
For the month of April, we'll be making recycled box gardens with wildflowers and herbs and books of poetry and pressed flowers.
